Misoprostol Added to WHO Essential Medicines List for Incomplete Abortion

04/28/2009

Gynuity is pleased to announce that it’s application to have misoprostol listed on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines for its incomplete abortion indication was favorably reviewed by the Committee. Misoprostol is now an essential medicine for incomplete abortion/miscarriage management. The judgment was made by an expert committee based on currently available evidence, which includes several guidelines and numerous randomized and comparative clinical trials for this indication.

The Committee’s decision on the inclusion of misoprostol for treatment of incomplete abortion is detailed on page 52 of the document WHO Technical Report Series – The Selection and Use of Essential Medicines, March 2009 (Unedited version) and is listed on page 27 of the document 16th WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, March 2009 (Unedited version). Both documents can be found on the WHO website at the following link.

Gynuity would like to acknowledge the support and advocacy efforts of our many colleagues on this issue.
