Gynuity has been collaborating with local colleagues in the public and private sector on two of our key program areas. The first is a feasibility study of a misoprostol regimen to treat incomplete abortion, conducted in a large tertiary level public hospital and a private primary health care center. The second was a multi-country trial of misoprostol for treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, also conducted in Egypt and Vietnam. Results from this study showed that, when no prophylactic uterotonic is administered, 40 IU IV oxytocin works better than 800 mcg sublingual misoprostol for treatment of PPH: active bleeding stopped in 20 min for 90% of women given oxytocin and 90% of women given misoprostol. These results were published in the Lancet in Jan 2010.
