Since 2010, in collaboration with Planned Parenthood Global, Gynuity has been providing training and technical support to increase awareness about misoprostol for reproductive health indications among policymakers and clinicians in Guatemala. An introductory project was conducted in the Hospital San Juan de Dios de Amatitlán that aimed to introduce misoprostol as an alternative to standard surgical treatment for incomplete abortion. Over 100 women were treated with an outpatient misoprostol protocol during the period of introduction. The vast majority of women completed their abortion with medication alone, and most women reported being satisfied with the method. Gynuity and Planned Parenthood Global also worked with the MoH to encourage inclusion of misoprostol as a treatment option in national clinical guidelines; these guidelines were published in December, 2012, and include evidence-based regimens for this indication.
