Gynuity has been collaborating with local colleagues primarily on two topic areas: medical abortion and postpartum hemorrhage. In medical abortion, Gynuity and colleagues have conducted a series of research studies on variations of a combined mifepristone-misoprostol regimen, the most recent of which was a multi-site national study exploring two by mouth routes of misoprostol administration following mifepristone through 63 days’ LMP. Research is also planned with mifepristone and misoprostol in the second trimester as an alternative to misoprostol alone regimens that are widely used in Turkey. Technical support is also provided by Gynuity to a number of in-country partners to help inform current practices and facilitate the use of mifepristone + misoprostol as an alternative to surgical abortion.
Our Turkish colleagues collaborated with Gynuity on research on postpartum hemorrhage, participating in a large-scale multi-country clinical trial to evaluate misoprostol for treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, also conducted in Burkina Faso, Egypt and Vietnam (published in Lancet Jan 2010).
Future plans include a randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of intravenous vs. intramuscular administration of oxytocin when used for PPH prophylaxis in the third stage of labor.
Additional activities in Turkey include:
- Technical assistance on strategic planning for the registration of mifepristone and national introduction of medical abortion.
