This systematic review commissioned by the WHO updates a review published in 2012 that assessed whether hormonal contraceptives affect the risk of HIV acquisition.  As in the original review, the data do not suggest a link between the use of oral contraceptives and increased risk; however, the relationship between progestin-only injectable contraceptives and risk of HIV acquisition continues to be uncertain. Women using injectables should be educated regarding this uncertainty and empowered to use HIV preventative measures. Contraception. 2014 Oct;90(4):360-90.
