Abortion Outside the Clinic: Imagining Safe and Legal Abortion in a post-Roe World

Date
March 9th, 2017

Gynuity staff was invited to moderate a Grand Rounds panel discussion at New York University School of Law on abortion outside of the traditional medical model. The session featured experts in law, medicine, and sociology. As abortion access diminishes across the United States, and the possibility of overturning Roe v Wade materializes, reproductive health advocates are beginning to imagine what safe, legal abortion would look like outside of the current clinical model. A study from the Texas Policy Evaluation Project found that 7% of abortion patients in Texas first attempted to end their pregnancies themselves before coming to the clinic, and declining abortion access could increase that percentage. Is this safe? Is it legal? Should it be legal? These are among the questions explored during the session.
