Clinical studies demonstrate that medication abortion regimens which include both mifepristone and misoprostol are more effective than misoprostol alone. However, misoprostol alone is recommended as a safe and effective alternative and is commonly used where mifepristone is not available or accessible.

Misoprostol stimulates uterine contractions and is widely used in reproductive health. Its use for obstetric and gynecologic indications include induction of labor, management of spontaneous and induced abortion, and prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage.
