Training on Misoprostol for Incomplete Abortion in Ecuador

Date
January 29th, 2010

In Quito, Ecuador, the effectiveness, safety, and acceptability of a 600 mcg regimen of oral misoprostol was compared to manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) for treatment of incomplete abortion. The study was implemented at the Hospital Gineco-Obstetrico Isidro Ayora, a government-funded tertiary-level maternity hospital, from November 2006 through October 2007. Upon completion of this study, hospital directors requested technical assistance from Gynuity to introduce the use of misoprostol for this indication in services provided in the emergency room. A training was held to prepare medical residents and clinical staff working in the emergency ward to offer misoprostol as first-line treatment to women presenting with incomplete abortion. The training was also attended by physicians and students from other departments of the hospital.
