Medical Abortion Trainings in the Republic of Georgia

Gynuity in partnership with the Georgian Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Affairs held trainings on medical abortion to increase awareness of the method among providers from two western regions of Georgia, Imereti and Ajara. The trainings aimed to strengthen obstetricians/gynecologists’ capacities to provide MA services in the regions. The training in Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest city and the capital of the western region of Imereti, was attended by 21 ob/gyns from Kutaisi and four neighboring cities. The training in Batumi, the capital of Ajara and an autonomous republic in southwest Georgia, was attended by 22 participants including 17 ob/gyns from Batumi and 3 neighboring cities, and 5 representatives of the Ajara Ministry of Health and Social affairs.

The regional trainings were followed by a training to prepare the local study team for launch of the upcoming clinical trial “Acceptability and feasibility of medical abortion in the Imereti and Ajara regions of Georgia: A study of 400 µg buccal misoprostol following 200 mg mifepristone for abortion up to 63 days’ gestation.”
