Testing Two Different Doses of Misoprostol in a Medical Abortion Regimen in Vietnam

Medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol has been widely available in Vietnam since the medications’ approval in 2002. The Ministry of Health Reproductive Health Guidelines stipulates that a medical abortion regimen of 200mg mifepristone and 400mcg oral misoprostol can be offered to women with gestations up to 49 days LMP. Gynuity held a training with 12 medical providers who will conduct a study that compares the efficacy and acceptability of 400mcg to 800mcg buccal misoprostol taken after mifepristone for women 50 to 63 days LMP. It is hoped that this study, which will enroll 320 women, will encourage the Ministry of Health to allow the provision of medical abortion up to 63 days LMP.
