Gynuity Health Projects, in collaboration with the Kazakhstan Association on Sexual and Reproductive Health (KMPA), convened a two-day meeting entitled “Improving Quality of Care for Early Medical Abortion in Kazakhstan” in Almaty, Kazakhstan on September 27-28, 2012.

On the first day of the event, fifty participants attended medical abortion seminar during which participants presented on the current state of elective termination of pregnancy in Kazakhstan. Gynuity presented on evidence-based practices, latest technologies and service delivery in early medical abortion. Presentations were followed by panel discussion on potential activities for improving quality of care for medical abortion in Kazakhstan. Participants highlighted the importance of enhancing quality of medical abortion services throughout the country in order to improve wellbeing of women of reproductive age. Seminar participants included representatives from the Ministry of Health, Gynuity, local NGOs, and medical providers. After the conclusion of the seminar, Gynuity trained 48 obstetricians/gynecologists from Astana and Almaty. The goal of the training was to familiarize providers with evidence-based practices in early medical abortion and strengthen their capacity to provide medical abortion services. Gynuity continues collaborative activities with KMPA in planning future projects on medical abortion in Kazakhstan.
