Regional Postabortion Care Conference

On May 12-13, Gynuity and UNFPA co-hosted a meeting of regional stakeholders from 19 countries from the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa enntitled “New Evidence and Strategies for Scaling-up Postabortion Care” at the Suzanne Mubarak Center for Women’s Health and Development in Alexandria, Egypt. The two-day meeting focused on disseminating lessons learned in efforts to expand postabortion care to the lower levels of healthcare systems. Examples focused on the potential of misoprostol to achieve greater access to care, task shifting in postabortion care to lower level providers, and expanding women’s treatment options. To promote broad participation and follow-up, FIGO’s initiative on the prevention of unsafe abortion also moved their two regional meetings for MENA and SSA participating countries to Alexandria to occur around this regional PAC meeting.
