Training for the Extended Gestational Age Medical Abortion Study
- Date
- June 24th, 2009
Gynuity held the first of a series of trainings for a medical abortion study involving clinicians in 6 U.S. cities (Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, St.Paul, Waco), the Republic of Georgia, India, and the Ukraine. The study will recruit approximately 1400 women, and seeks to assess the effectiveness of medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol at 57-63 days’ versus 64-70 days’ gestation when offered in the context of existing early medical abortion services. Currently 63 days is the usual upper gestational age limit for medical abortion in the early first trimester. If the study shows the method is effective through 70 days gestation, greater numbers of women would potentially have the option of terminating their pregnancy in a noninvasive, safe manner.
